Good to see you posting regularly, Danger. Until last month I worked solely off a 13″ Macbook from 2007. I had a colleague come over to my house and laugh when he saw my set up. He gave me the old construction worker/hammer analogy. (If you were a construction worker and your income relied completely on that, wouldn’t you have the best tools possible if you could?)
He had a point so I went out and bought a new 27″ iMac and a 23″ LCD screen. I’m definitely more productive with the much faster computer and wayyyyyyy more screen space.
I also worked for a long time on a toy chest. I didn’t have a chair, I sat on a toy chest. I had the funds to get a sweet chair, I just didn’t want to waste any of it on something that I didn’t deem necessary. Finally I said to myself, “I’m making great money, I’m sitting on this damn, uncomfortable toy chest for 16 hours a day…I might as well step it up and get a decent chair.”
My point is, we’re all cheap because we know the ups and downs in this industry and want to always maximize ROI. I think it’s perfectly acceptable though to spend a little extra to invest in the proper tools that can take you to the next level.
Awesome vid post there Danger!
I actually am not extravagant with the office furniture either. I just replaced my desk and chair of 5 years, with a cheap $20 desk at ikea, just a cheap $10 particle board top and 4 $2.50 metal screw on legs. The chair I have is the Moses model which cost me $39. I replaced a 5 year old chair that had the fabric torn, the stuffing almost out of it and a desk that had loose joints and was about to fall apart. Had to get it so that my 3 year old imac wouldn’t fall and break god forbid.
Frugality is a good thing! Although I love a steak once in a while and want to have an “OLD” bmw, not a new one, I do not plan to just foolishly blow my monies away.
@Justin Hey, that’s a great story about the toy chest! Weird. I was just thinking about 30 minutes ago that I’d like to do a video interview of you the next time we’re at the same conference. Stories like that would be fun I think.
You are right about the hammer analogy. I should just spend some money and get some better equipment. But to have a decent office I need to either sell my house and move, or put on an addition. Our home is crowded.
P.S. I’m taking this blog up a few notches this year hoping to earn my way onto the holy grail we like to call affbuzz!!! New layout coming within a couple weeks.
@Tom Yeah, “frugality” is a nice way of saying “cheap bastard”. The truth is that I’m mostly just cheap about spending money on myself.
I don’t really hesitate to spend money on people I love though. Now that I’m making more money, my wife is starting to buy whatever she wants and she’s lovin’ it!
